Welcome to Issue 8 of the Parish Council NewsletterLatest NewsOn the 22nd of September the five Town and Parish Councils in Kirklees signed a Charter with Kirklees MC setting out how they would work together for the benefit of the local communities. This document is the result of many months hard work and is a stepping-stone towards an individual Charter currently being brokered between Denby Dale Parish Council and Kirklees MC which will hopefully see local people having a much greater input into the decisions affecting our communities. September 2005The Council welcomed Dr. Mary Courtney as co-opted member for Clayton West to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Clr. Smith. October 2005Members of RAW attended this meeting and spoke of their concerns about the erection of two Wind Turbines at Pool Hill Denby Dale. After considerable debate the Council voted by a small majority in favour of this application but with a number of concerns. Public ParticipationPrevious issues of this newsletter have covered the ability of members of the public to address the Council for 10 minutes at the start of the meeting on agenda items only. It has been resolved to extend this time at the Chairman’s discretion. Also, the restriction to agenda items has been removed. Although the Council will not be able to debate such items at the current meeting these can be placed on a later agenda. David HinchliffeWe welcomed former MP David Hinchliffe to our October meeting where Clr. Tony Barlow made a presentation of Local History books as a mark of appreciation from Councillors for his many years of support and friendship. We wished David a long and healthy retirement. Textile MuseumMany people are unaware that there is a museum in Skelmanthorpe, it features local social history and the history of the textile industry in the area in particularly handloom weaving. A group of Councillors recently visited and spent a very enjoyable and informative two hours in what is literally a one up one down cottage. It is a living memory and absolute must for anyone interested in their local heritage. It is privately run and caters for small groups by appointment only. It is called the Textile Heritage Unit and is situated at 6 Queen Street., Skelmanthorpe. If you are interested in organising a visit full details are available through the Clerks Office.
