ISSUE 4                                                                                                       NOVEMBER 2004

Welcome to the 4th edition of the Denby Dale Parish Council newsletter. We are striving to reach as many people as possible with this publication to help keep you informed of what is happening in the Parish and current issues the Council is involved in. Unfortunately, costs prevent us mailing this out to every household in the Parish but it is available through the Libraries and can be found on the Denby Dale Website at denbydale.com. If you have any forthcoming events you would like featured in this newsletter please send information to our clerk, Mrs Wood, at Skelmanthorpe Council Offices or ring Clr. JC Birdsall, details below.

RECENT MATTERS

The Council hosted an extremely well attended open meeting at St. Augustine’s Church Scissett on the possible siting of wind turbines within the Parish. A presentation on the planning considerations was given by Patrick Auterson, Planning Policy Manager from Kirklees. This was followed by a lively debate where many important issues were raised from both a pro and anti perspective.
To collect the information and to raise those issues that are seen to be important for shaping the future, the Parish Council will be inviting all schools and relevant societies in the area to participate in a public consultation. We will also welcome any support and data that individuals can offer towards the Denby Dale Parish Plan.
Please contact Clr. Robert Allen on 01484 866131 if you would like to become involved.

September 2004

Our three new Kirklees Ward Councillors were welcomed to the September meeting, a number of local issues being discussed, particularly where the £65,000 available to the Area Committee for pavement improvements could be allocated.
The Council received a letter from the young people of Skelmanthorpe petitioning for repair and improvements to the skateboard facility at Cross Lane playing fields. It was agreed to ask Andy Wickham, the Countryside Officer and Debbie Lumb of Shelley College to investigate the use of this site as part of the ongoing youth initiative, and also approach the Area Committee with regard to assistance with funding. Continuing on the youth initiative it was reported that the Denby Dale site was now complete, and that fund raising was ongoing in Emley.
The Council are also engaged in dialogue with Royal Mail in an attempt to have the opening hours of Scissett sorting office extended for collection of parcels.
Much consideration has been given to the problems of speeding traffic through Emley. Kirklees MC have now agreed to install measuring devices to assess traffic speeds and volume.

October 2004

The Council received information that Kirklees were undertaking a feasibility study into kerbside glass collection. This would involve houses in the area receiving plastic boxes for glass bottles, which would be emptied on a fortnightly basis.
Concern was shown at the dis-establishment of the school crossing patrol, Wakefield Road, Denby Dale and Kirklees MC have been asked to carry out further surveys of usage in the light of the considerable effort shown by some parents in encouraging a ‘walk to school’ policy.
It was reported that minor repairs to the skateboard ramp at Cross Lane Skelmanthorpe had been carried out and consultations are ongoing into the improvement of this facility.
Royal Mail have unfortunately concluded that it would not be viable to extend the opening hours of the Scissett sorting office.

YOUR COUNCIL

In the 2nd issue we talked about speaking at Council meetings during public discussion time and as stated you are free to address the Council on agenda items. Agendas are published a week before a Council meeting and are available from Libraries, the notice board at Skelmanthorpe Council Offices and from the website.
If you would like a matter to be considered by the Council it must be put on the agenda. To do this you should speak or write to a Councillor (we don’t bite) who will endeavour to have the item discussed at the next meeting and will invite you to come along and speak on the issue if you wish. Alternatively you may write to Mrs G Wood, The Clerk at the Council Offices, Skelmanthorpe.
Please remember that we are a local Council and can only consider issues relevant to the Denby Dale Parish.

DENBY DALE PARISH COUNTRYSIDE PROJECT

The Countryside Project aims to help local people achieve the environment they want through practical support on tasks, help with fundraising, implementation of projects and advice on the environment / countryside.
Work is currently being undertaken at local schools improving the grounds by the creation of wildlife areas. This helps to meet the requirements of the Kirklees biodiversity action plan through habitat creation and management for both flora and fauna.
The project also allows local people the opportunity to have a say in what happens in their environment, providing a vibrant and sustainable future for the benefit of all.
