ISSUE 7 AUGUST 2005Welcome to Issue 7 of the Parish Council Newsletter.Latest NewsCouncillor Mary Harkin, Mayor of Kirklees, presents the certificate awarding Quality Status to the Parish Council at a reception before this year’s Annual Parish Meeting. May 2005A new Civic year and a new Chairman. Councillor Tony Barlow was elected to the Chair for the 2005 2006 Civic year at the Annual Parish Council meeting in May having served as Vice Chair the previous year. The principal function of this meeting is to elect representatives onto the various bodies on which the Parish has representation including the Denby Dale Environment Trust, The Kirklees Rights of Way Forum and Historic Buildings Trust. Police Public MeetingThe Council received a report on a public meeting with the Police Authority at St Augustine’s Church Scissett. The Public were informed that crime in Kirklees was at a 10 year low and in the Denby Dale area was currently at an extremely low level despite what the media would have us believe. They have increased their presence in the area and are strengthening their neighbourhood policing team based at Kirkburton police station. June 2005The Council received a presentation from Clr. Dennis Hullock of Kirklees MC regarding proposals for the future of Council run Care Homes. A further 8 million pounds have been allocated for care and a number of options are at the consultation stage. The Parish Council has expressed concerns over the future of Scissett Mount Care Home and is anxious that facilities are retained within the Parish. The Council have written to Metro with concerns regarding over-crowded buses from town at afternoon peak times as a result of the reduced carrying capacity of Yorkshire Traction’s updated fleet and concerns that changes to concessionary travel will further add to the congestion. July 2005Members of public raised concerns at June’s meeting over the increase in hire charges to use school facilities for community organisations. After extensive investigation the Council have been informed that school governing bodies are responsible for setting hire charges. As a result of this the Council have written to all governing bodies to ask them to give due consideration to the plight of community organisations and hold any necessary increase to a minimum.
