Please keep us informed of any forthcoming events you would like featured in this newsletter. You can send information to our clerk, Mrs Wood, at Skelmanthorpe Council Offices details on the next page. CURRENT MATTERSOver the last few months various issues have been discussed at Council meetings. Here are extracts from the minutes of those meetings. February 2004Chris Barker of Yorkshire Rural Community Council opened discussions about formulating a Parish Plan for the area. The Council received notification it had been successful in obtaining a Parish Transport grant to extend South Yorkshire hourly bus service No 300 to link Upper Denby with Penistone, following the withdrawal of the commercial service operated by Yorkshire Traction. Concerns about speeding traffic through Emley were discussed along with lighting at the zebra crossing in Skelmanthorpe. It was also agreed that a joint public meeting be held with the Area Committee regarding the Local Development Framework – this is the new development plan Kirklees MC have to produce by 2007. March 2004A large deputation of Scissett villagers raised concerns about the possible development of 94 new homes to the rear of the baths. This meeting saw the annual visit of the Police where Councillors had the opportunity to raise local policing issues, items discussed included the problems of drug abuse in rural communities, road safety issues including speeding and parking, vandalism in the area, current crime figures and how the Police are deployed within the Parish. Again issues of speeding traffic in Emley were addressed as were waiting restrictions in Wakefield Road Scissett. Councillors were advised on the progress of providing youth facilities in Denby Dale and Emley. April 2004Les Reason, Planning Services, gave a presentation on wind farms, how planning applications would be considered and on Government guidelines. Britain is committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 10% by the year 2010. Councillors discussed the issues raised but no decisions were formulated, as there is currently no formal proposal in the area. Your CouncilThe Parish Council is your Council, it is the voice of Denby Dale and you are actively encouraged to be involved. Over the next few issues of this newsletter we hope to help you understand how the Council works and how to be involved. All Council meetings are open to every body (subject to space) and ten minutes at the start of each meeting is devoted to public discussion, where you can have your say on agenda items only and Councillors may in turn ask you questions. After public discussion time the meeting proceeds under a code of conduct known as Standing Orders and you will no longer be allowed to address Councillors. It is the norm for agenda items addressed during public discussion time to be brought forward, so you do not have to sit through the entire meeting to hear what the Council has to say. Remember we actively encourage participation.
