DENBY DALE PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTERWelcome to Issue 13 of the Parish Council Newsletter. Community First RespondersThe Parish Council presented a cheque for £954 to WYMAS to fund training and equipment to provide another voluntary group in the area and recruiting volunteers is already well underway. The Community First Responders Scheme is a way of getting life saving skills to patients more quickly and provide communities with trained volunteers who will attend and treat certain ambulance 999 calls. In semi-rural and remote areas the Community First Responder is more likely to reach a patient within minutes and provide vital care and support until an Emergency Vehicle arrives. November 2006Andy Wickham, Countryside Officer, reported to the Council on projects he was currently involved in. This included bridges over the River Dearne. Labour for these projects has been supplied by The Ten Villages Conservation Group and The Upper Dearne Woodlands Conservation Group. Work on the footbridges over the River Dearne is almost complete with works having been carried out on the following bridges: Carr Bridge , Bank Lane Bridge , Cookstall Bridge , Stubbin Bridge , Putting Mill Bridge and Scissett Bridge . This work has varied from repainting/wood preserving handrails, clearing invasive scrub encroachment to rebuilding footpaths leading to the bridges, including footsteps and completely rebuilding the hand-rails of the bridges. A shrub/wooded area close to the entrance of Scissett Middle School is being developed to provide footpaths and seating areas for the children in an area which would otherwise be out of bounds to them. Two new ponds have been installed at Shelley College in conjunction with the College Environment Warden Tim Scott. It is hoped these ponds will provide a further refuge for the Great Crested Newt which is already found on the site. Planting and footpath work has already been undertaken to add to the environment park, which the college grounds are to become. It was reported that the new allotment site at Windmill Crescent Skelmanthorpe would be available from 2 November and that tenants had until 19 November to move. Although a long time in coming, the village now has a new model allotment site thanks to the efforts of the Parish Council and Geoff Hirst from Kirklees Leisure Services. Although this is not the outcome we would have wished for, prior to the intervention of the Parish Council, Skelmanthorpe stood to loose the Cumberworth Road site with no replacement. December 2006Members of the public expressed concerns about traffic on Wakefield Road Denby Dale, of particular concern is the increase in heavy lorries. The Council have resolved to hold a public meeting concerning traffic across the whole Parish and this will be held Tuesday 13 February, 7pm St Augustine’s Church Scissett. This meeting will be attended by West Yorkshire Police and Kirklees Highways. In response to a request from residents of Birdsedge to extend the green bin scheme to their area the Council asked KMC if this were a possibility. Unfortunately, the smaller vehicles, currently servicing this area, are not equipped to handle wheeled bins, but Kirklees are investigating a viable scheme, as legislation requires kerbside recycling to all properties by 2010. money in response to the request from the children of Birdsedge for additional play equipment on their play area. We can now report that the work at Lower Cumberworth is almost complete and that KMC have promised to carry out the work at Birdsedge in March this year. January 2007As previously reported, the Council have pledged money to bring forward the refurbishment of the children’s play area in Lower Cumberworth and further Parish PlanA number of public meetings have been organised throughout the area to consider the proposals of the draft Parish Plan. All meetings start at 7.15pm and will be held as follows: 7 February - Denby CE School, Upper Denby 8 February - Methodist Church School Room, Emley 9 February - Skelmanthorpe Council Offices 12 February - Darby & Joan Club, Clayton West; 14 February - Methodist Church , DenbyDale
