Welcome to Issue 15 of the Parish Council Newsletter

May 2007
The May Council meeting is the Annual meeting at which the new Chair and Vice Chair are elected to serve for the ensuing Civic year.  Cllr Graham Turner was elected as the new Chair with Cllr Edward Shaw as his Deputy.    This is also when members are elected to serve on the various committees of the Council and other bodies on which we have representation. This year, being an election year, is also the first meeting of the new Council where we welcome thirteen new faces, and welcome back seven old faces!
As is a tradition in the Council, outgoing Chair Cllr John Birdsall presented a memento of his term of office and a bouquet of flowers to the Clerk.

May also saw the arrival (or non-arrival) of the new Stagecoach timetable with major service reductions for much of the Parish.  Many people have raised concerns, and the Council has received the usual un-helpful responses from Metro and the operators.  As a result of this, a small number of Councillors have formed a working party to see if we can find a way forward and secure a more reliable and acceptable  service.  The reinstatement of a service to Barnsley and a link with the Hospital are a priority.visitors to our region.  So, pass the word around and when on holiday, if someone asks where you come from send them to www.denbydale.com.  If you are not on the internet at home, maybe visit your local Library and try it out there.  Also, if you have a forthcoming event, let Hazel, the Parish Clerk, know.

The Denby Dale Parish has a joint funded Countryside Project with a full-time Kirklees Officer, Andy Wickham, working in the area.  Andy is involved with many projects working with schools and young people on environmental projects and The Ten Villages Conservation Group to name but a few.  He gave an annual report to the Parish Council and anyone interested in getting involved with any of these projects should contact him at  the Council Offices 01484 222960.

July 2007
Mike Proud from Kirklees MC addressed the Council with regard to services at the Bromley Farm Recycling Centre, the Council is seeking longer opening hours and increased capacity to cut down on queuing.  Mike gave some positive news on the possibility of providing secure destruction facilities for documents and electronic data.  He also invited Councillors to visit the Vine Street Recycling Plant.
The Council has received some positive responses to its requests for improved road safety measures in Clayton West and Scissett.  These include a 30mph gateway at Hill Top on High Street, traffic signals with pedestrian crossing at the junction of Wakefield Road and Sunnymead in the vicinity of Scissett Baths and KMC is to look closely at Church Lane and Chapel Hill and come back with proposals later in the year.
The Skelmanthorpe Youth and Community Group have sought assistance with funding for the new Youth and Community Centre planned for the Squash Club extension.  The Council resolved to grant £8000 with a pledge to re-visit the matter at the end of the Financial Year.  Councillors have offered to help with a forthcoming Coffee Morning for the Youth and Community Group, to be held at the Skelmanthorpe Council Offices, on the morning of Saturday
