Welcome to Issue 14 of the Parish Council Newsletter
Latest News The final draft of the Parish Plan was approved at the April Council meeting and it is hoped that the document will soon be available. It is intended to make the full version available through Libraries and other information points with an abridged version being distributed to all homes in the Parish. Again our thanks go to Cllr Robert Allen for his immense input and the assistance the Clerk has provided in its preparation. The information contained in the plan is derived from public consultation and our thanks go to those who completed questionnaires or attended the public meetings. We are pleased to report that the new play area in Lower Cumberworth is now complete and was opened officially on Wednesday 18 April by Cllr Elaine Ward supported by Cllr John Birdsall, Chair of the Parish Council, Cllr Graham Turner and Cllr Colin Watson who brought the original children’s request before the Council.
February 2007 Assistant Clerk, Kenneth Haigh, reported that the Road Safety Committee and Home and Leisure Safety Committee had been merged into a new Denby Dale Parish Accident Prevention Committee. These committees have served the area raising awareness of safety issues and have representatives from the Police, Fire Service and other bodies. Of particular interest they run poster and calendar competitions through the local Primary Schools. The Highways Public meeting was held during February where representatives from the Police and Kirklees gave presentations on their role in road safety and traffic management issues and members of the public were able to express their concerns. A member of the public raised the issue that there was a blockage on Footpath number 77 at High Flatts. The Council resolved to take this up with the Public Rights of Way Unit and it is anticipated that the necessary works to remove the blockage will be carried out at the same time as other works in the area to reroute a section of this footpath back to its correct route.
March 2007 A member of the public raised the issue that the pilot scheme, stationing Paramedics at Skelmanthorpe Health Centre, was funded until April and asked if the Parish Council could write to the Primary Care Trust in support of the continuation of the scheme. As this was not an agenda item the Council were not able to make a resolution, however, it was put on the agenda for the next Finance and General Purposes Meeting where we can report that the Council resolved to write as requested in support of the scheme. Following a request of the previous month with regard to the condition of the Upper Denby Play Area, the Clerk reported that Kirklees MC were planning a full refurbishment at a cost of £30 000 but had a shortfall of £5 000 and were asking if the Parish Council could make this up. This again was referred to the F and GP Committee who, we are pleased to report, have agreed to this being done.
April 2007 This meeting was the last full meeting of the current Council with all Councillors up for re-election in May. We have just learned that work on improvements to the Birdsedge play area will have commenced when this newsletter goes to print. This is a jointly funded project between the Parish Council and the Area Committee. The unfortunate delay is as a result of the manufacturer’s delivery time. Cllr Graham Turner presented information about a new type of slow down sign recently deployed successfully across the border in Barnsley. The signs display a vehicle’s actual speed in green if it is within the speed limit and red if the vehicle is speeding. Apparently these signs cost a fraction of the ones currently deployed in Kirklees, like the one near the Star crossroads. The Council resolved to ask Kirklees Highways if they had considered using these signs and if so could consideration be given to deploying them at some of the problem areas in the Parish. Street naming is an interesting item often found on the agenda, the Parish Council have an input into selecting names for new developments. We generally oppose the flowery names thought up by the developer and promote names relevant to that area. These names are often derived from a former field name, the name of a former property on the site, or a name relevant to the land’s use in the past.
